HER HORRORS

Artist Statement

Elli Nauman

My work explores the push and pull between masculine and feminine ideas and representations. It is based within the media of horror and draws on ideas from within that content, focusing on common tropes and stereotypes. This allows me to use my work to look at how these ideas reflect and influence current society. My main practices are printmaking and oil painting, but I am also interested in collage and found objects or assemblage. I want to bring into my work items and ideas that hold heavy symbolism or history behind them, adding overlapping meaning and depth to my images.

The general idea surrounding my work is the portrayal and perception of femininity and feminine identity and the fear and stigma surrounding it. The supplied interaction of masculine and feminine within horror media and the reflection of that perpetuates the ideas of patriarchy within society. The implied power that masculinity and male characteristics are given allow a sense of superiority, forcing a character to strip all of their femininity to simply survive, as well as take on feminine traits to die.

I am influenced by surrealism and assemblage, as well as etching, screenprinting, and aquatinting. I use these methods and styles to create a sense of strangeness and unbelonging. I want the space within my pieces to feel slightly disjointed to add to the thoughts I am having as I travel through these ideas. I want to use images and mediums that create an intimate space that the viewer can step into to think about horror media’s portrayal of women and feminine characteristics.
